Dublin City University
Dublin City University (DCU) is a technological University. It carries out extensive research and training for industry, has an internationally recognised research profile, has spun out several companies and has an extensive IP portfolio. It houses the National Centre for Sensor Research (NCSR), a multi-disciplinary centre on biology, physics, chemistry, materials and engineering. The NCSR hosts the Biomedical Diagnostics Institute (BDI) and the Centre for Bioanalytical Sciences (CBAS). BDI and CBAS have major industrial partners like Becton Dickson, Enfer Scientific, Amic, Hospira and Analog Devices.
Professor O’Kennedy is a member (and Head for over 12 years) of the School of Biotechnology and Director of the Applied Biochemistry Group (ABG). This is a multidisciplinary School covering all areas of biology and bio-processing. It runs programmes in Biotechnology, Analytical Sciences, Genetics and Cell Biology and Bio-processing and has an extensive research programme. The ABG has over 30 members (postdocs, postgrads, research assistants and technicians) who focus on the generation of antibodies and their applications in sensor-based analytical systems. It has developed a customised high throughput facility for the generation and screening of recombinant/monoclonal antibodies. Moreover, it has commercialised products and works closely with major biosensor-based companies and collaborators worldwide.
DCU has carried out many projects for the generation of specific analytical methods involving antibodies and sensor applications. This has resulted in over 40 publications, extensive interactions with industry, commercialisation of results, patenting, product development, extensive personnel training in specific techniques and company formation.
